Introduction

Europeana.eu gives access to digital cultural heritage from Europe ’s museums, archives, libraries and audiovisual collections. The project Europeana v1.0, funded under the European Union’s eContentPlus programme, will develop the operational site which is scheduled to launch in 2010. At that time we hope to have 10 million items in europeana.eu, more then double the number of items we have at the moment. In order to reach this objective we welcome all contributions from cultural heritage institutes across Europe .

Europeana’s content strategy

The content in europeana.eu demonstrates the richness and variety of Europe ’s cultural heritage. It covers all domains (museums, archives, libraries and audiovisual archives) from all European countries. Reaching 10 million items by 2010 is an ambitious goal and Europeana v1.0 is not the only project contributing to this.

At the moment the EDL Foundation, the foundation owning europeana.eu, is involved in several projects. These projects will, besides developing their own portals, technologies and guidelines, also act as Aggregators and deliver aggregated content to europeana.eu. This aggregation is key to the success of europeana.eu, there are thousands of cultural heritage institutes in Europe and unfortunately we are not able to ingest all the content from the institutions directly. Based on this Partner Application Form we will decide on the best way for your organization to deliver content to europeana.eu, either through an Aggregator or directly to the Europeana office. This decision is based on the domain your institute belongs to and the projects currently running.

The process

This Partner Application Form is sent to you or your organization because you have indicated you would like to contribute content to europeana.eu. Please fill in this questionnaire as accurately as possible. Once we have received your Partner Application Form we will evaluate your request and decide on the appropriate next steps. We might have to involve some other projects in this process, so please allow us up to 6 weeks to reach a decision.

We would like to draw your attention to the fact that once your institution has been approved for content ingestion into Europeana you will have to sign our Data Provider Agreements.

Question 3. Can you give us some examples (URLs) of your digital content on your website?

We need to be able to assess the quality of your metadata and digital objects. It is particularly important to understand that Europeana only takes metadata which contain URLs of digital objects on your website. Please have a look at an example record of Europeana at http://www.european a .eu/portal/full-doc.html?uri=http://www.europeana.eu/resolve/ r ecord/04801/5E835CA266404A77E96525B545A125DABEF32E2D The thumbnail is automatically generated by Europeana from the provider’s website. This is what your digital object may look like and how it works in Europeana. Further information regarding thumbnails can be found here: https://version1.europeana.eu/web/guest/technical-requirements/ (is this the right link?)
